The township of Surat can be found 78kms south of Roma, along the Carnarvon Highway. The community of Surat is centred around the historical site of a Cobb and Co. changing station.

The area of Surat was explored by Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1846, who travelled along the Balonne River. A year later, that area was classified as Maranoa East. In 1850a township site was to be chosen for Maranoa East, arranged by Mitchell. The Balonne River was chosen as the appropriate location. The site was later named Surat – named after the town in West India.
