History and Geography Facts
Mitchell is located on the banks of the Maranoa River, 87 kms west of Roma on the Warrego Highway, 587 kms west of Brisbane and 176 kms east of Charleville, has a population of just 985 towns people. Named in honour of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell who explored the area in 1846.
The Maranoa River flows around the northern and eastern sides of the town before flowing into the Balonne River.
The 15th Prime Minister of Australia, Francis Forde was born in Mitchell. He is famously known as Australia’s shortest serving Prime Minister, having just served just eight days – he was also Australia’s longest living Prime Minister.

Great Artesian Spa
The Great Artesian Spa was opened in 1988 and is situated in the main street of Mitchell. There are two pools of artesian water; one heated and the other designed for those who prefer a cooler experience. The water used in the spa pools is renewed regularly and comes from the Great Artesian Basin, which is one of the largest artesian basins in the World – which underlies around one-fifth of Australia. It covers a total area of more than 1,711,000 square kilometres and has been relied upon for the town water supply since 1927.

Restaurants and Accommodation
In 1846 Thomas Mitchell explored the Maranoa district. Eight years later, Mitchell Downs was occupied by Edmund Morey. His homestead was later used for the Maranoa Hotel, and the town of Mitchell Downs formed around it. The Mitchell Downs post office was later renamed Mitchell in 1878.
